Director and celebrated artist Zhou Tiehai, asked Tilman Thürmer to contribute the design for the cafe for this year’s West Bund Art & Design Fair. Located in a spacious glass pavilion, that is connected to an old factory, the minimalistic design is dominated by a led-light sculpture that follow the crystalline structure of the space. The West Bund Art & Design is one of Shanghai’s most important annual art events and attract galleries, collectors and visitors from around the world.
The cafe of the West Bund Art & Design fair is located in a 577 sqm large glass pavilion that is inserted to the voluminous industrial structure of a former steel factory that functions as the fair ground. The main design element is a light sculpture made of over 500 meters of led light-strips that runs through the entire space. The cafe seats around 120 guests and has two bars.
The atmosphere of the cafe is characterized by a dialogue of natural light, artificial light and reflections. During day-time, an abundance of natural light flows through the floor-to-ceiling glass curtains and balances the visual impact of the dynamic light sculpture. At night, the space is dominated by the warm light of the sculpture and it’s multiple reflections in the window glass. Tilman Thürmer about his design: ’I tried to find a poetic way to express the function of the space as a place where people meet, dine and talk. Initiating some sort of dialogue between the two natures of light seemed to me the perfect solution for this.’
In order to implement the idea the team of COORDINATION ASIA had to work with the very special architectural structure and light situation of the space. During the design process, they used a real-time 3d-model to explore the space and study natural light and the course of the sun. 3D-specialists then drew lines of light into the model that followed the structure of the space and are in dialog with the natural light and the reflection of the surrounding glass curtain. During the implementation phase, they studied the effect in real world and made punctual adjustments by adding, moving or removing some lines according to the situation on site.
Held at the West Bund Art Center, West Bund Art & Design is Shanghai’s annual contemporary art event directed by celebrated artist Zhou Tiehai. Dozens of galleries from around the world – including White Cube, Pearl Lam, Pace Gallery, and more – bring work from their collections to take part and help bring attention to burgeoning and exciting new artists. Shortly following the event is the Shanghai Biennale, making this an action-packed season for art in the city.
